Spring Cleaning: Stash Taming with Laura from Needles, Pins, and Baking Tins
Hi there friends! I’m Laura Jane from www.needlespinsandbakingtins.com. Megan asked me to share with you a little about fabric organization for the Pink Castle Spring Cleaning Series, so I thought I would show you my fabric unit.
This is actually a pretty new purchase. I replaced an old dresser which was falling apart and not really working for me, with this:
Its an Ikea Expedit unit, stood on top of 2 Ikea Malm drawer units. In the drawers, I keep all that unsightly stuff like batting, scraps, interfacing, dies and other junk.
On top, I keep my stash. Oooooh pretties!! I love walking by it. It makes my house look like a fabric shop :o)
The whole cube system works so much better for me than my last stash storage place which looked like this:
Be warned though... you will expand your stash to fit whatever you choose to house it in. I only just realised, looking back at that old picture, how much my stash has grown!!
I use one cube for each main colour plus extra ones for things like "special" fabric, larger cuts for backings/clothes, and wips. I also store my pre-cuts in the wicker baskets at the top.
It just works, which is what I wanted, and because the colors are all separate, its easy to keep relatively tidy. And, ooooh, pretties!!

Thanks for joining us, Laura! A well-displayed stash is good incentive for actually USING what you have! Readers, how do you manage and organize your stash? Stay tuned for more stash organization tomorrow with Elizabeth from Don't Call Me Betsy.

I have three large bookshelves and I wrap my fabric around comic book boards, so they look like mini bolts lined up. I have a shelf for each color and I also keep my dots and stripes together. Every time I walk into my sewing room and look at my fabrics, it makes me happy. :-)

Organized mostly by color, but a little by designer or type. Did a write up on my blog last month: http://studiodragonfly.blogspot.com/2013/01/how-i-organize-my-fabric.html

Oh, very pretty AND practical (both of which are important when it comes to fabric storage, I believe ;o). Love your storage solution!
Um, and yes, Laura, you’re so right… I find as I keep adding storage to my sewing room… I keep filling it! lol What a fun vicious circle though. ;o)

I love it! I have been getting my local quilt shop to save their empty bolts and I cut them in half and store my fabric on shelves like you do.

I have th Ikea cubes like you do. But I put my fabric on my own cut mini bolt holders and then put them colour organized into boxes I have picked up from my local walmart. I pull out a lot of fabric when I am auditioning something and I need a way to keep it neat. Also I like to keep the dust and pet hair from it. The pets are not in this room much but I think that this is better. I included a like to the blog post I did last year.
Great posts on stash busting.
